How to maintain oral health in Ramadan ?






Ramadan is marked as one of the Holy Months for muslims all over the world. Muslims in this blessed month keep fast for approximately 30 days where they abstain physically and spiritually to abstain from eating, drinking and other bad influence activities. Prolonged abstinence from eating and drinking dehydrates the body especially the mouth, which results in bacteria build up affecting the oral health.


To manage a better oral health during the month of ramadan here are few tips:


  1. Regular brushing using fluoridated toothpaste is essential after ‘iftar' and ‘suhoor’ to prevent bacterial stagnation and dehydration. As prolonged dehydration is a major cause for promoting bad breath, gum diseases and soreness of tongue. In addition, use of tongue cleaner is also necessary to remove white coating on the tongue that contributes to bad breath.

  2. Rinse your mouth with mouthwash (Non-Alcohol) to maintain proper gum health.

  3. The traditional way to keep breath fresh was using a Miswak; however, the improper use of miswak can increase tooth abrasion. Hence, if you are using Miswak, please use it gently.

  4. For each individual, apart from your oral health, body health is equally important. Therefore, doctors recommend reducing the intake of coffee, tea, and caffeinated drinks. Better to hydrate your body by drinking plenty of water, juices (preferably sugar-free) and soups. Spicy foods can lead to acidity on the empty stomach.

  5. For patients with dentures, the best way to maintain their oral hygiene is by regularly brushing the dentures at night and after meals with a soft toothbrush and using a denture cleaning solution overnight to prevent bacteria growth, which may aggravate gum disease.

  6. Special care should be taken by diabetic patients as they are more prone to gum infections and dental caries. Thus, Dentist advice for a regular checkup especially during the month of Ramadan to ensure better oral health.

  7. Avoid food such as chocolates, pudding etc that contain glucose or fructose, which can reduce the acidity of oral cavity leading cavities & erosion.

  8. Try taking around a good amount of water after iftar and before suhoor to remain hydrated throughout the day.

  9. Have fruits and fresh vegetables at the time of breaking fast as they have high fiber content which will help in normalizing your gut bacteria.

  10. Regular dental check-up is essential as teeth is one of the most used organs and the main connection to the other parts of the body. Hence, taking care of teeth is important to take care of your health.
